“Greener Every Week” is my ongoing series in which I do one (cheap, easy) thing every week to make my home or lifestyle more healthy & eco-friendly.
Everyone knows that bringing your own bags to the grocery store is a good thing to do for the planet, and I always wanted to get in the habit, but could never remember to bring them. I tried keeping a few of those canvas tote type bags in the trunk of my car but invariably remembered that fact once I was halfway through checking out. Even when I did remember, I didn’t really like walking through the store with a bunch of canvas bags, it just didn’t feel particularly slick. And I’m nothing if not slick. (Yeah…just go with it.)
But then I invested in a couple of Envirosax and I have drastically reduced the number of bags collecting in a cupboard in my kitchen. Which is good, because the last thing I really need is a bunch of kitchen space being taken up by grocery bags. The best thing about these babies is that they fold up super small (about the size of my fist – that’s a medium sized apple in the picture below for scale) so I can keep a couple of them in my purse and not have to consciously remember them – when I get to the checkout line they are already there! I usually only carry two because they fold out to a very substantial size – I’d say they hold about 2 standard paper grocery bags worth of stuff. I’ve filled them up with all sorts of heavy cans and jars and things and the seams are nice and strong.
And the patterns! They have so many options, and they are so stylish! Not only do they stay nice and incognito while I do my shopping, but I get to feel a little bit fashionable as I walk to the car. Who doesn’t love feeling fashionable at the grocery store? OK…maybe it’s not super high on your list of priorities but every little bit helps if you ask me. They even have one with a robot and one with Oscar the grouch, so I really don’t see how you could go wrong.
Note: Nobody has paid me in any way to endorse these products, I just genuinely like them and want to share my enthusiasm with you. If you click the link and buy them from Amazon I’ll make like 37 cents through their affiliate program, so that would be sweet, but that’s the only compensation happening around here.
