Alan Roettinger’s book Speed Vegan is pretty awesome for a several reasons. One, everything in it can be made in thirty minutes or less. Two, all of the recipes are made with healthy, whole food ingredients (you know I wouldn’t settle for anything less for you guys, though!). Three, the guy has a fun sense of humor – the writing style of the book is light and witty. Four, the recipes are interesting! He adds a neat twist to several standards (like the basil-and-chocolate Pots De Crème I made last week) and includes several unique recipes that I’m dying to try out.
I like to let people know whether I think a cookbook is good for beginners or not, and this one is sort of tough. On the one hand, everything is fairly quick and easy to make, and he even includes a section with tips on tools and how to stock your pantry. On the other hand, the recipes are unique enough to perhaps be intimidating to someone who’s not already familiar with cooking and how flavors will play together. So maybe I’ll say it’s good for any level of cook, as long as they are brave enough to try recipes with titles like “Papadums with Fresh Green Chutney,” and “Hominy and Black Bean Salad.”
Which isn’t to say that all of the recipes are that different – many of them are great classics (although even those usually get a fun twist of some kind) like pasta, potato salad, beans, and mashed potatoes. Cuisine from many countries is represented – Italian, Asian, Indian, Mexican, and good ol’ American (I think. I would call potato salad American, but we probably got it from somewhere else).
I love that even though the recipes have impressive, gourmet-sounding names, they all come together in under thirty minutes. Great for weeknight cooking and impressing dinner party guests! The author wasn’t even vegan himself when he wrote the book (although apparently he did go vegan after writing it – a good testament to how good the recipes are) so he had an eye towards making food that appeals to everyone.
