“Greener Every Week” is my ongoing series in which I do one (cheap, easy) thing every week to make my home or lifestyle more healthy & eco-friendly.
So as I mentioned last week, I really try to avoid the super obvious eco-friendly tips for my “Greener Every Week” series – and it probably doesn’t get much more obvious than “Use reusable bottles!”
But! If you’ll notice, most reusable water bottles are plastic or aluminum. With plastic you run the risk of BPA or other chemicals (I may be paranoid, but even when it’s BPA free I still don’t trust plastic very much – if we didn’t know about BPA a few years ago and thought plastic was safe, what else is in there that we’ll find out about in five years?) and with aluminum there’s often a lining made of plastic or your water can taste sort of aluminum-y.
Fortunately, I recently learned about another option – glass bottles with a silicone casing. The part you drink out of is just regular old glass, but it’s got a sleeve made of silicone to make it more hardy in case you drop it or bang it into something. A great compromise between durability and portability!
I use these Takeya ones that I found on Amazon, and there’s also these by Lifefactory, which look cute too. I like mine because they kind of seem like what a ninja would use if one were to use reusable bottles. Which I guess they might, you’d think ninjas would need to stay well hydrated, right?
I don’t have kids yet but another application for this idea is in baby bottles – anyone tried those?
Note: Nobody has paid me in any way to endorse these products, I just genuinely like them and want to share my enthusiasm with you. If you click the link and buy them from Amazon I’ll make like 37 cents through their affiliate program, so that would be sweet, but that’s the only compensation happening around here.
