“Greener Every Week” is my ongoing series in which I do one (cheap, easy) thing every week to make my home or lifestyle more healthy & eco-friendly.
Whether you use them for leftovers, taking your lunch to work, or storing fresh produce, most people find themselves in need of some kind of storage containers in the kitchen. Unfortunately, most of the time these are plastic, which is convenient and cheap, but can contain BPA and a host of other nasty chemicals – and when it comes to food, I tend to think keeping it as chemical-free as possible is a good idea. (And of course, the disposable kind aren’t terribly environmentally friendly, either.)
Fortunately, if you’d like to switch to eco-friendly glass storage containers, you’ve got several (relatively inexpensive!) choices. I personally own these by Pyrex (they also makes these) – I like mine because even the lids are glass (although they come with a plastic set too, for when you need a tighter seal), and you can pop them directly into the oven to reheat things.
I’ve also seen these Snapware containers and they’re quite nice – the lids are plastic but the part that holds the food is glass, so that’s a great step in the right direction, and it makes them more convenient for using to take your lunch to work or transport food to a picnic. There’s also these – so you definitely have a lot of choices, depending on your budget and what you need them for.
The ones I own are on the smallish side – they work great for leftovers for me and my husband, but if you have a larger family or are using them to take food to work you might want the larger kind with the snapping lids. They are all dishwasher safe and super easy to clean (and since they’re glass they don’t discolor as easily as some plastic containers!) – and mine are pretty hearty so I’m not too worried about banging or dropping them.
Does anyone have any of these containers? Do you like them, or have others you’d recommend?
Note: Nobody has paid me in any way to endorse these products, I just genuinely like them and want to share my enthusiasm with you. If you click the link and buy them from Amazon I’ll make like 37 cents through their affiliate program, so that would be sweet, but that’s the only compensation happening around here.
