Enchilada Sauce

For some reason, whenever I go to make enchiladas or any sort of dish involving enchilada sauce, I always seem to forget that particular ingredient. This means I have learned to make my own from tomato sauce and spices, which I generally have in the pantry – and luckily it’s super quick and easy to do!
Essentially you just mix together your dry ingredients, which are chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and a bit of flour:

Then add a can of tomato sauce to a small saucepan, dump in your dry mix and 1 1/2 cups of water, and stir everything together. Heat until it’s warmed and thickened as much as you’d like it, and use just like you’d use enchilada sauce in any recipe! You can even taste it as you go and add more salt or chili powder or whatever you like.

Yum! Now I am craving Mexican for dinner. Thanks…
Yum! I am making this for sure. I’m going to bookmark this for the next time I need it. I love making my own spice mixes and things so this is perfect for me. I’ve been looking for a recipe like this for a while so thank you
This is great. I love recipes that use spices I usually have on hand!
Your post could not have been more timely! I was just lamenting not being able to make some enchiladas the other night because I didn’t have enchilada sauce. Now this will be my go-to recipe. Thanks for sharing!
Love this idea! Any thoughts on how to do this without canned tomatoes now that the good ones are starting to appear at the market?
That’s so easy!! Thanks for sharing this great recipe
That is ridiculously easy! Looks like enchiladas will be in my future!
Seems like a lovely sauce!
I’ve discovered your blog a few months back and added it to my bloglovin’. I just got the chance to read up on it (posts since May) and I really like it, I’m definitely going to keep following
Mine is very similar, however, I brown the flour in a little olive oil first. I use vegetable broth instead of water, and make my own cilantro pesto (nothing beats fresh cilantro) which I add towards the end. I live in a house full of Marines carnivores, and they all love it.
what happened to this blog? it is one of my favorites and there hasn’t been an update in forever!! i’m concerned… are you okay?
I hope all is well. I love this blog and am concerned that there haven’t been new posts for a couple of months. I hope everything is okay in the clean green simple world!
I was thinking the same thing as the two women above me, I hope everything is alright!

This looks delish!
Enchilada sauce is my favorite! Thank you for a wonderful recipe!
That looks great! I always buy premade enchilada sauce…never again!
I never knew making enchilada sauce was so easy!!! I’ll take this over the canned version any day. Plus if you buy low sodium tomato sauce you can really control the sodium levels versus canned enchilada sauce. Yum! Thanks for the great recipe!
Oh, this sounds and looks delicious. Can’t wait to try it.
I made this last night. It was delicious. And SO much better than the canned version. Never again will I buy premade enchilada sauce.
Danielle thanks for sharing AFTER you tried it!
Jessica – thanks for this awesome recipe with simple ingredients that I definitely always have on hand! I love the concept of easy but delicious! I am making this TONIGHT!
Just made this and it was absolutely wonderful. Quick, easy, simple, and vegan. Exactly what I was looking for.
This was so good! And so much healthier than the canned enchilada sauce. Served it on top of veggie enchiladas from oh she glows. Will definitely use this sauce recipe from now on!
Every year I dehydrate my home grown organic tomatoes and end up with too many jars to store safely. Now I grind up batches in my Vitamix and put the powdered contents in zip lock bags, dated of course, into the freezer. Now when I need tomato sauce, or paste, I add water and I have organic sauce without all the commercial additives. I use it for soup/stews and other recipes including my own ‘instant’ tomato soup. Add 1/4 cup of the powder to 1 1/2 cups of boiling water, let sit for a few minutes and its good to go. I tried it with this enchilada sauce recipe and it works great.
