Enchilada Sauce

Make your own enchilada sauce – it’s fast, cheap and easy!

For some reason, whenever I go to make enchiladas or any sort of dish involving enchilada sauce, I always seem to forget that particular ingredient. This means I have learned to make my own from tomato sauce and spices, which I generally have in the pantry – and luckily it’s super quick and easy to do!

Essentially you just mix together your dry ingredients, which are chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and a bit of flour:

Then add a can of tomato sauce to a small saucepan, dump in your dry mix and 1 1/2 cups of water, and stir everything together. Heat until it’s warmed and thickened as much as you’d like it, and use just like you’d use enchilada sauce in any recipe! You can even taste it as you go and add more salt or chili powder or whatever you like.

Ingredients

  • 4 Tbsp Chili Powder
  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 Tbsp flour use brown rice or some other GF flour to make this GF
  • 1 14 oz can Tomato Sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups water

Instructions

  • Mix all dry ingredients together in a small bowl. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine tomato sauce, water, and spice mix and stir until well combined. Heat until the sauce is warmed through and as thick as you like (if it starts out thicker than you'd like just add more water). Use wherever you would use enchilada sauce.

  • FYI….the real enchilada sauce has no tomatoes in it ! The reason why is reddish is because of the chili powder ! If you use tomatoes sauce you need to rename it because ItIs Not enchilada sauce !!!

  • Every year I dehydrate my home grown organic tomatoes and end up with too many jars to store safely. Now I grind up batches in my Vitamix and put the powdered contents in zip lock bags, dated of course, into the freezer. Now when I need tomato sauce, or paste, I add water and I have organic sauce without all the commercial additives. I use it for soup/stews and other recipes including my own ‘instant’ tomato soup. Add 1/4 cup of the powder to 1 1/2 cups of boiling water, let sit for a few minutes and its good to go. I tried it with this enchilada sauce recipe and it works great.

  • I never knew making enchilada sauce was so easy!!! I’ll take this over the canned version any day. Plus if you buy low sodium tomato sauce you can really control the sodium levels versus canned enchilada sauce. Yum! Thanks for the great recipe!

  • Mine is very similar, however, I brown the flour in a little olive oil first. I use vegetable broth instead of water, and make my own cilantro pesto (nothing beats fresh cilantro) which I add towards the end. I live in a house full of Marines carnivores, and they all love it.
