For some reason, whenever I go to make enchiladas or any sort of dish involving enchilada sauce, I always seem to forget that particular ingredient. This means I have learned to make my own from tomato sauce and spices, which I generally have in the pantry – and luckily it’s super quick and easy to do!
Essentially you just mix together your dry ingredients, which are chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and a bit of flour:
Then add a can of tomato sauce to a small saucepan, dump in your dry mix and 1 1/2 cups of water, and stir everything together. Heat until it’s warmed and thickened as much as you’d like it, and use just like you’d use enchilada sauce in any recipe! You can even taste it as you go and add more salt or chili powder or whatever you like.
Vegan, Gluten Free, Low Fat, Soy Free, Refined Sugar Free
- 4 Tbsp Chili Powder
- 1 tsp Cumin
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 2 Tbsp flour (use brown rice or some other GF flour to make this GF)
- 1 14oz can Tomato Sauce
- 1 1/2 cups water
- Mix all dry ingredients together in a small bowl. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine tomato sauce, water, and spice mix and stir until well combined. Heat until the sauce is warmed through and as thick as you like (if it starts out thicker than you'd like just add more water). Use wherever you would use enchilada sauce.
