This summer, cool down with homemade frozen lemonade. It’s a perfectly tangy, sweet, and refreshing drink that will seriously treat your taste buds! What’s more, you can easily adjust the flavor and consistency according to your liking. Here’s how to make this simple yet tasty drink.

How to Make the Best Frozen Lemonade

You will need:

  • lemons
  • maple syrup and/or sugar
  • water
  • ice cubes*
  • slice of lemon

*If possible, use small ice cubes or pre-crushed ice. This will be much easier on your blender.

On that note, you’ll also need a high-powered blender or food processor that can handle ice. This is very important. If you don’t think your blender or food processor can handle the job, consider using small ice cubes (made with a mini ice cube tray) or pre-crushed ice. Your frozen lemonade might be more liquidy, but it will still be delicious.

If your blender or food procesor has a “crush” setting, be sure to use it.

Finally, you’ll also need a grater and lemon juicer.

There are several ways to sweeten your lemonade. You can use maple syrup, regular white sugar, or a combination of the two. Other options include coconut or beet sugar, or honey if you aren’t vegan.

Set your ice cubes out at room temperature. Meanwhile, grate one or two lemons until you have one tablespoon of lemon zest. Be sure to avoid grating the white layer (pith) of the lemon rind. This part is bitter.

Juice the lemons until you have about 1/2 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice. Strain (or pick out) the seeds.

If using mini ice cubes or crushed ice, add all the ingredients to your blender or food processor. Otherwise, add the ice cubes in 1/2 cup increments. This will allow the liquid to get things going.

Note: After taking this photo, we ended up letting the ice cubes sit for a bit longer until they mostly melted.

Blend until the mixture is thick and icy.

Serve your frozen lemonade immediately.

If you want to make your frozen lemonade in advance, replace the ice with 4 cups water. Blend until combined, then pour into ice cube trays. Freeze until solid. When you’re ready to enjoy some frozen lemonade, puree the lemonade ice cubes in a blender.

The liquid will naturally pool at the bottom, so be sure to frequently mix the lemonade while drinking it.

If you love berries, toss is in a few strawberries or blueberries while blending the ingredients. You can also add lavender syrup or fresh mint leaves, if you’d like.

To make this homemade frozen lemonade even more satisfying, add a scoop or two of vegan vanilla ice cream. This is perfect if you want a thicker, creamier beverage. Otherwise, you can’t beat the simple combination of ice, lemon, and water.
